컬럼비아대학교 동문 여러분 안녕하십니까!

 

2023년 3월 1일 컬럼비아대학교 한국총동문회 회장으로 취임한 연세대 김용호 교수입니다. 여러모로 부족한 제가 중책을 맡게 돼 어깨를 짓누르는 무거움에 몸 둘 바를 모르겠습니다. 동문 여러분의 성원과 가르침을 바라며 선뜻 큰일을 맡게 됐습니다.

 

먼저 전임 금중철 회장님의 노고에 깊은 감사를 표하지 않을 수 없습니다. 금 회장님의 헌신이 없었더라면 우리 총동문회는 COVID-19의 긴 터널을 슬기롭게 헤쳐 나오지 못했을 것입니다. 앞으로도 총동문회를 위해 계속 함께해 주신다니 든든하고 감사합니다.

 

저는 1992년 2월 모교 문리과 대학원 정치학과 (Department of Political Science, Graduate School of Arts & Sciences)에서 박사학위를 받고 귀국했습니다. 동문회 막내로서 심부름도 하고 연락도 돌리면서 동문회의 일원이 됐다는 기쁨과 자랑스러움을 한껏 안았었습니다. 또 2014년부터 4년 동안 두 분의 회장님을 모시며 총동문회 일을 꾸리는 동안 많은 분에게 커다란 도움을 받았습니다.

 

COVID-19의 긴 터널을 빠져나온 우리 총동문회는 이제 기지개를 켜고 커다란 도약을 해야 할 시점을 맞았습니다. 전공과 생각과 나이의 다름을 이어주는 다리를 건너 대한민국 최고 지성들의 다양한 네트워킹으로 총동문회를 살찌워야 할 때입니다.

 

그 동안 모이지 못했던 Hobby Club들이 다시 가동하기 시작했습니다. 이미 Band & Wine이 시동을 걸었고 등산모임도 다시 시작됐습니다. 곧 Golf와 Art클럽도 활동을 재개할 것입니다. 다양한 취미를 만끽할 수 있는 총동문회로 다시 우뚝 서게 될 것입니다.

 

또한 젊은 동문과 격의 없는 소통의 장을 마련해 라떼와 MZ세대의 가교가 되는 총동문회를 만들겠습니다. 연세대학교에서 학생복지처장을 지내며, 또 한 해 천 명이 듣는 글로벌리더십을 강의하면서 젊은 세대와 함께 호흡하며 지냈기에 포럼과 신입생 환영회, 연말 갈라 등 행사를 준비하면서 젊은 동문이 많이 나오실 수 있도록 노력하겠습니다.

 

아무리 좋은 계획을 세워도 동문 여러분의 도움과 참여가 없다면 힘든 길이 될 뿐입니다. 많은 동문들의 참여를 유도하기 위해 운영위원회 위원들을 공개 모집하여 총동문회 행사와 운영에 적극적으로 참여하고픈 동문을 많이 모실 생각입니다.

 

동문 여러분에 의한 동문 여러분을 위한 동문 여러분의 총동문회가 되기 위해 노력하겠습니다. 많은 가르침과 조언을 부탁드립니다.

Dear Korean Alumni of Columbia University,

 

As of March 1, 2023, I, Yongho Kim, Professor at Yonsei University, have been appointed as the President of the Columbia Alumni Association Korea. Though the responsibility is painfully heavy for me to bear, I have accepted the position with the hope of your support and guidance.

​

First of all, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to my predecessor President Jung-Cheal Kum for his hard work. Without his dedication, our association would not have overcome the long tunnel of COVID-19. I am happy to know that we can still count on his full support for the alumni association moving forward.

​

I received my Ph.D. from the Department of Political Science at Columbia University's Graduate School of Arts & Sciences in February 1992. I was delighted and proud to become a member of the alumni association as the youngest alumnus, doing errands and networking with fellow alumni. During the past four years, while serving as a board member under two presidents, I have received much help from many people.

​

Now that our association has emerged from the long tunnel of COVID-19, it is time for us to take a big leap forward. We need to enrich our alumni association by connecting different fields, ideas, and ages that exist within this network of the most intelligent people in Korea.

Hobby clubs that have not been able to meet in person are starting again. Band & Wine already had an event, and hiking groups are also resuming. Soon, golf and art clubs will also resume their activities. This association will be one where its members can fully enjoy each other's company through hobbies.

The association will also remove the barriers between the younger and older generations by creating unreserved opportunities for connection. With my experience working with thousands of young people as the professor of global leadership and as Director of Student Welfare at Yonsei, I will prepare forums, welcome events for new students, and end-of-year galas to encourage young alumni to participate.

​

No matter how excellent our plans may be, they would not amount to anything without your help and participation. To encourage the participation of our alumni, we will publicly recruit willing and passionate alumni to join as operating committee members.

 

I hope my efforts as President will be marked by an association "of the alumni, for the alumni, by the alumni." I welcome and request your advice and guidance for this journey.
